Amazon Go Opens to Public in Seattle

Amazon Go, Amazon’s new convenience store, opens to the public today after a nearly 14-month trial period open to the company’s employees. The 1,800 square foot cashier-less, checkout line-free mini market is the company’s first brick-and-mortar convenience store. It allows customers to enter, grab products, and leave without ever having to wait in line or pull out their wallet thanks to their “Just Walk Out Shopping” experience. All customers have to do is download the Amazon Go app to enter the store, grab the products they want, and go.

Rather than having shopping carts or baskets, customers are able to put their items directly into the shopping bag that they will leave with. Whenever customers grab an item off the shelf, it is added to their virtual shopping cart. If an item is put back, it is then removed from their cart as well. All of this is possible with Amazon’s technology: an array of small cameras floating above store shelves. The cameras can see and identify every item in the store without needing a special chip for identification.

How does Amazon Go work?

  • Soon after, you’ll be notified that your receipt is ready and card will be charged.
