Oak View Group (OVG)
UPDATE: The NHL may delay bringing in an expansion team until the 2021 season. NHL Seattle is scheduled to make their presentation to the Board of Governors Executive Committee on October 2. Construction on KeyArena won’t begin until an NHL team deal is done. Therefore, OVG has moved their targeted demolition start date to December.
We have reached the final month of events at KeyArena before it is scheduled to shut down for the next two years to undergo renovations. OVG and the City of Seattle have been busy going through the entitlement process since the Memorandum of Understanding was signed last December.
The renovation, originally slated to cost $600 million, has now increased to $700 million. Some elements that raised the cost include dedicated locker rooms for the Storm and future NHL and NBA teams, 50,000 extra square feet for storage, and the Space Needle View Club.
Remaining Events at KeyArena
Tonight (September 7) marks the beginning of the WNBA Finals where the Seattle Storm will take on the Washington Mystics as they look to bring a third WNBA championship to Seattle. The Storm’s second WNBA Finals game on Sunday (September 9) will be sandwiched by two concerts as Sam Smith (September 8) and Florence + The Machine (September 10) bring their world tours to Seattle. The Storm will play at UW’s Alaska Airlines Arena in 2019 while KeyArena is under construction.
KeyArena’s last event will take place on Friday, October 5th where former-Sonic, Kevin Durant, will return to Seattle as the Golden State Warriors take on the Sacramento Kings in NBA preseason action.
